Dear Friends

We will be having a first experimental test of a skype conference for the future field on Jan 10th 8PM Eastern Australian time. We will be discussing the issue of foresight and communication / media. I have attempted to attach this file to this web log a prep document. I hope it works.

Creating an “Online Ramp” for conferences – your ideas/suggestions encouraged

November 18, 2006 by

AusForesight 2006′s online event registration process invited participants to provide a small bio on what they do and what they hope to get out of the conference.  This was a great device because it offered a ‘virtual introduction’ to attendees in the lead up to the event.

If there is to be an AusForesight 2007, I’d like to see the ‘Online Ramp’ aspect of the event grow from a series of bios to an online conversation that facilitates great offline conversations at the conference.

Are there existing online spaces/forums created for futurists that might act as a forum in the lead up to a possible AusForesight 2007? If there aren’t, I’m considering setting up an online forum using VBULLETIN for futurists to meet, but I don’t want to re-invent the wheel.

Besides an online forum, are there examples you know of that help make the lead-up to conferences successful?

All suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

Vision Cafe – Sydney – 2nd Monday of the month (Quick report on first event)

November 18, 2006 by

As predicted by the comments in the previous post, 4 people attended the World First Vision Cafe in Sydney.

Over 90 minutes the conversation flowed freely and the enthusiasm of all four of us made for a great meeting.

I’ll be in the US, so I won’t be able to attend the next Vision Cafe, scheduled for DECEMBER 11 at the same venue (Fair Trade Cafe, Glebe).

Comment on this post to RSVP, and use the comments (or lack thereof) for guidance as to whether there’ll be a Vision Cafe in December!

Vision Cafe – Sydney – 2nd Monday of the month

October 27, 2006 by

Due to popular demand, I have organised a regular gathering for Vision Cafe in Sydney. If you’re in another city, feel free to initiate similar ‘meetups’ based on the 2nd Monday, as I am suggesting, or choose your own model!

VENUE: The Fair Trade Coffee Company (33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe) is a great, relaxed venue. I spoke with Roger, the cafe manager, and they’re happy to have us.

TIME: 5.30pm-6.30pm

FREQUENCY: 2nd Monday of the Month starting 13th November.
RSVP: Leave a comment on this page.

Welcome to Vision Cafe

About this blog

I promised to create this blog at the AusForesight 2006 conference in Melbourne. During a session on the way the world of futures/foresight/futures studies/futurology/futurism is communicated, a group of us agreed the conversation should continue online. This blog is a forum for that conversation to continue.

The software: WordPress

I chose wordpress because it is low maintenance, allows multiple contributors and is based on open-source software that is freely available. If we choose to export this blog and carry it on at its own domain in the future, that is an option. So flexibility / scalability was a primary consideration.

Participating in Vision Cafe

Everyone is welcome to post responses, ideas, thoughts and suggestions to any post at the Vision Cafe.
To participate in this blog as an author/contributor, you will need to do two things:

  1. Sign up for a wordpress account (Tip: Unless you want your own blog, make sure you check the “Just a username, please.” box).
  2. Request an author account for the Vision Cafe by commenting on this post.

Cheers,

Tim Longhurst
